The first hour in Japan is not the moment to discover that your phone has no data. Decide how you'll connect before the airport lights, the suitcase wheels, and the train signs start asking questions you're too jet-lagged to answer.

The good news: this is one of the easier pre-trip decisions to get right, once you know what you're actually choosing between. There are three tools, they solve the same problem in different ways, and the right one usually falls out of two questions — what phone are you carrying, and how many people are you carrying it for.

What each option actually is

It helps to know what each one physically is before comparing them.

eSIM is a digital SIM profile, not a physical card. You install it through your phone's settings — either before you leave home or once you land — and it runs alongside, or instead of, your regular SIM. There's no plastic to lose and no tray to open. The catch is that your phone needs to be eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked. Most phones sold in the last several years support eSIM — on Apple's side the line starts at the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR — but locks are common on phones bought under a carrier contract, and not every model can run more than one active eSIM profile at once. Apple, for instance, supports a physical SIM plus an eSIM across that whole range, but only iPhone 13 and later can hold two eSIMs at once, and in every case the phone uses one cellular data network at a time.

Pocket WiFi is a small rented router, roughly the size of a deck of cards, that creates its own WiFi network. You carry it, charge it overnight, and connect your phone, tablet, or laptop to it the way you'd join any hotspot. It never touches your phone's own SIM or settings, which makes it the simplest option if your phone is locked, older, or not eSIM-compatible.

A physical travel SIM is the traditional route: a small card you swap into your phone, provided the phone is unlocked and has a SIM tray. Once inserted it behaves like a normal SIM. Card size is less of a trap than it used to be — the travel SIMs aimed at visitors are commonly shipped as a multi-size punch-out that pops down to nano, micro or standard — but installation steps still vary by provider, so it is worth reading the instructions before your card arrives rather than at the airport.

All three answer the same question — get data in Japan — and the differences that matter are setup, sharing, and what you're responsible for carrying and returning.

Coverage and speed: less different than it looks

All three ride on Japan's major mobile networks. Coverage in cities, along the shinkansen and commuter rail lines, and in most places visitors go is strong regardless of which option you pick — Japan's dense rail network means connectivity infrastructure has followed the trains for decades, long before it needed to follow tourists. Where you'll occasionally notice a gap is deep in mountain terrain or on certain rural stretches — and that has more to do with geography than with eSIM versus WiFi versus SIM. The two places travellers most often expect to lose signal are the two that were fixed years ago. NTT Docomo's own service listing covers every Tokyo Metro and Toei subway line, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications announced in November 2020 that every operating shinkansen route had been brought into coverage, tunnels included, from that December. Carriers still note that reception can drop in individual spots, so this is "reliable," not "guaranteed."

The variable that actually matters is your plan and your device, not the country. A cheap data-only plan with a low daily cap will feel slow the moment you hit that cap, no matter which of the three delivers it. When you're comparing plans, treat the data allowance and what happens after you exceed it — full stop, or just slower — as more important than the brand name attached to the offer.

How the cost structure works

The three options are priced differently in shape, and it's more useful to understand that shape than to memorize numbers that will be out of date by the time you travel.

Rates move often enough that printing numbers here would go stale fast. Check the current price on the provider's official page before you commit, and compare the total cost for your actual trip length rather than a headline daily rate — some plans look cheap per day but require paying for the whole rental period upfront regardless of how many days you actually use it.

Traveling with others: one connection or one per person

This is often the deciding factor, more than price or speed.

Pocket WiFi is built for sharing. A single router can usually serve several devices at once — enough for a couple or a small family to stay connected off one rental. That means one thing to charge each night, one thing to keep track of, and one thing to hand back at the end of the trip. It also means that if the battery runs low or the router gets left behind in a hotel room, everyone loses signal at the same time.

eSIM is per-phone. Each traveler installs their own profile on their own device, so everyone has an independent connection with no shared battery and no single point of failure — but a group of four needs four separate eSIM plans, purchased and installed individually rather than split across one rental.

eSIM has an advantage that matters most in the first hour: you can install the profile before you leave home and activate it only once you land, so your phone finds a signal the moment the plane reaches the gate — no counter to find, no line to stand in. The two things worth confirming ahead of time are that your phone supports eSIM, and that it's carrier-unlocked. If either is uncertain, sort it out before departure day.

Pocket WiFi requires a pickup step: most commonly a counter at the arrival airport, though some providers will post the device to your first hotel in advance so it's waiting at check-in. Either way, there's a physical handoff, and a matching return step at the end of the trip — a drop box at the departure airport, a postage envelope, or a counter return. Missed returns are usually where deposits get complicated, so build the return into your last-day itinerary rather than treating it as an afterthought while you're rushing for a flight.

None of these is universally the better choice — the right one depends on your device and your travel party more than anything else.
